Time to mess with valve stuff

Kinja'd!!!

Gross parts. Looks like that spring thingy has been spinning around that shaft. Getting the valve covers off is a bigger PITA than it has been on any other car I’ve owned. There’a bunch of plumbing and vacuum shit blocking the bolts, and you just have to sort of force it out of the way.

feeling the things. adjusting the space. Lots of carbonized schmoo. Thank the Ford you don’t have to mess with shims and other bullshit to do this thing. Just twist the nut and mind the gap.

Kinja'd!!!

I got a special feeler that’s kinked just for setting valves. Makes it a little less fiddly. It fact the bend keeps the feeler in place so you can set the gap with the feeler in place.

Kinja'd!!!

New corks for the valve hats.

Kinja'd!!!

Everything back together. Except the hood, which I realized would make a perfect sled if it ever snows here.

That’ll teach you to buy a four stroke.

Take before and after shots with and without the hood and turn it into a gif. I just spent the last hour doing that instead of working and it was probably the most rewarding thing I’ll do all week.

how’s the balance on those things? I’ve never seen/experienced a V4 in person.

They run a balance shaft, as long as the idle is set high enough they’re about as smooth as any 4 cylinder. If you lug it things can get rough.

It seems strange to me that cork is still used for gaskets.

I mean it works, but don’t you have to keep re-tightening them? Aren’t rubber and fiber materials better?

I guess it is just cheap. There are silicone gaskets available for these, but I bought a full set of gaskets, and cork is what the ones included are made of.

I would think a 90 degree V4 would be smoother than a 60 degree V4 like the Taunus.
